Gate Pa - A Historic Battle Site where the Maoris were outnumbered, but successfully defended themselves with the fore-runner to Trench Warfare.

Gate Pā was the name of a  Maori  or fortress built in 1864 only 5 km (3 miles) from the main British base of Camp Te Papa at Tauranga, during the Tauranga Campaign of the New Zealand Land Wars between 1845 and 1872. The wars were fought over a number of issues, the most prominent concerning Maori land being sold to the settler population.

Entrance to the Historic {and sacred} Site

Unfortunately, this is one of the rare occasions where I have witnessed negative graffiti.

Now the modern road and development dissects the full extent of the original site
